An Apple a day

Keeps the doctor away?

Hey Health Techies!

“An apple a day keeps the doctor away” may be an old adage, but it may be taking on new meaning with Apple’s current initiative.

In a surprise to literally no one, there is reportedly a project going on at Apple right now to create an AI-driven health coach that would be integrated into its devices with a a target release of early 2026. The idea is that the data collected by your Apple Watch and iPhone would be made actionable with insights from your “health coach”.

And this is exactly what healthcare needs!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. We do a terrible job harnessing data in healthcare. We collect it, and it collects dust. For a long time people have been collecting data on their watches like step counts, heart rate, and sleep metrics only to look at them at the end of a workout or end of the day and quickly forget about them.

It’s natural. Most consumer-facing wearables and fitness trackers up until recently have been focused on a retroactive “how did I do” point of view.

How did I sleep?

How was my workout?

How many steps did I do today?

Even those tools that have historically been good at answering the less reactive and more proactice “how am I doing” question, are still very focused on a point in time rather than trends. Think thermometers: measures temperature at a point in time but most aren’t tracking trends over the course of an illness.

This innovation could put at least a portion of Apple Health’s patient data into action.

By integrating AI into health monitoring, routine tasks such as tracking dietary habits and physical activity can be more effectively managed by users, hopefully leading to healthier choices over time and even early intervention like we’ve seen with their sleep apnea and atrial fibrillation notifications.

Do I think it replaces a real healthcare professional? Absolutely not. But I don’t actually think that’s the intent.

My hope is that contrary to Bill Gates’ recent comments about AI replacing doctors in the next decade, AI health coaches can empower patients to take a more active and consistent role in their own health management. With continuous monitoring and tailored daily feedback, individuals may experience improved adherence to health recommendations. This proactive approach could potentially enable healthcare providers to focus more on preventive care and early intervention, ultimately enhancing the quality of patient care.

What’s also important to note here is that Apple’s health infrastructure isn’t all step counts and heart rates. Apple Healthkit acts as a repository for collecting and storing fitness and health data from a ton of other apps and platforms, potentially allowing your health coach to be able to act on a whole slew of health related information, not just fitness goals.

As Apple’s Health infrastructure gets even more of a foothold and they continue to train their AI models with real clinical experts, this could be a really exciting offering, exemplifying how technology can support and augment treatment provided by a healthcare professional. I’m really excited to see it in action. Keeping my eyes out for updates until then.
