Hey Health Tech x Matt Haley, PharmD

In partnership with

Hey Health Techies!

A couple of weeks ago, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Matt Haley, an experienced operator and leader in the pharmacy and health tech space, to talk about mindset, smart job moves, and career lessons learned. Matt has held leadership roles at CVS, Amazon Pharmacy, and Arine, and most recently started as a director at LucyRx. I invited him to share his insights with my most recent cohort of Health Tech Success students.

Here’s what stood out in our conversation, and what every clinician navigating this new era of healthcare should hear.

Tell me about yourself and your journey into nonclinical work

Tell me about yourself and your journey into nonclinical work. I am a pharmacist by training and have spent the past decade working at two Fortune 5 companies and a health tech startup building and scaling clinical programs. I transitioned into non-clinical work in 2018 at CVS Health in product development. That opportunity helped springboard my career by gaining experiences and skills to prepare me for the following roles I had.

After getting acquainted with intros and a bit about his background, Matt had some great advice for the group.

🔑 “Put this word in the back of your mind: connection.”

Matt kicked off our chat by sharing one of his biggest career lessons.

“Relationships or connection—that’s the word I want you to remember. It’s what helped me get into Amazon. A recruiter friend. A former CVS colleague. That helped me get my foot in the door.”

Matt emphasized how relationships—whether warm intros or cold outreach—are the real game changers.

📬 Cold Outreach Got Him a Final Round Interview

And here’s the kicker: Matt’s most recent interview to job offer? It started from a cold message on LinkedIn after applying.

“I applied to a role and guessed who the hiring manager might be. I messaged two people. One of them was the hiring manager. The hiring manager responded and scheduled an interview with me later that week.”

His message? Simple.

“It was basically: here’s the role I applied for, here's why I’m a good fit, and I’d love to connect. That’s it. Nothing fancy.”

No Premium LinkedIn. No magic hack. Just putting himself out there and not being afraid of rejection. I loved this since I also happen to be a big fan of the cold email or message. It’s a simple and effective method that often gets overlooked.

🧠 Reframe the resume game

We got into some practical job search advice too—especially around resumes.

“I don’t tweak my resume for every cold app. It’s not worth the time. But if I’m connected to someone at the company or really want the job, I’ll make some key changes.”

Matt’s bigger point? Focus on getting your resume in the hands of a human—not a robot.

“The resume matters, but the connection matters more. Get it to a decision maker.”

💡 Your clinical skills are more transferable than you think

“Ever had a patient not take their meds or follow your advice—and you convinced them otherwise? That’s sales. That’s influence. You already have skills companies want.”

He connected that same skill set to roles in customer success, program management, and clinical operations.

“You’re leading without authority. You’re building trust across functions. That’s what program management is.”

As we wrapped up, I asked Matt if he had any final thoughts.

What’s one thing you wish you knew when you first started your career pivot?

“It’s you versus you. Your job is to stay in motion. Keep learning. Keep reaching out. And believe you’re already qualified—because you are. Don’t get yourself lost by trying to compare yourself to others and other people’s success. Find a mentor to help you pivot and to help you stay grounded along the way.”

🎯 Quick Takeaways:

  • Start with connections. Don’t job search alone. A referral is your best shot.

  • Get your mind right. Recognize your inner critic. Reframe it. Keep moving.

  • Use cold outreach. One good message can change everything.

  • Your skills are transferable. Learn to speak the language of business, not just healthcare.
