Nontraditional healthcare job I wish I knew sooner

Implementation manager

Hey Health Techies!

I’ve been running the Hey Health Tech job board for almost 18 months now, and still love tracking down the best jobs out there for you whether you’re new to health tech or looking for your next role. I hear from so many of you that you love checking the board and have made it a part of your routine which I absolutely love.

A few types of roles have popped up over and over and have become fan favorites, so I wanted to take the next several weeks to go into more detail about these standout positions, and why I think they’re so great for healthcare professionals.

Certainly choosing a direction is one of the hardest parts of a career pivot so if I can make it even a little easier for you, then I’ve done my job here.

First up: Implementation Manager.

❓ So what does an implementation manager even do?

  • Implementation managers in health tech are responsible for overseeing the deployment and integration of new technologies within an organization. They develop a project rollout plan with external customers, act as a liaison between technical teams and end-users, and help staff adapt to new processes and technologies.

  • As an example, a practice is looking to adopt AI-assisted software into their documentation processes. You, as an employee of the AI software company, would assist either in person or remotely, in helping the practice implement the software, answer questions, and ensure proper use.

🧑🏻‍💻 Why are implementation managers so important?

  • Implementation managers ensure a smooth transition from old systems (or no systems) to new ones, minimizing disruptions to staff and patients. They also provide training and support to clinical staff.

  • In healthcare tech, solutions are popping up everywhere. Healthcare solutions die when a good idea goes unused. Implementation managers sit between the sale of the product and the more long-term customer success function to ensure that teams are set up properly, trained, and their expectations are properly set for when they may expect to see a return on their investment (ROI).

👨🏽‍⚕️ Why are clinicians so well-suited for this role?

  • No one knows clinical workflows better than clinicians. From HIPAA to prior authorizations to charting, clinicians have lived it. This experience allows them to empathize with clinical teams implementing new technologies and quickly build a relationship built on trust.

  • Some of the most common keywords that show up in implementation manager job descriptions are things that clinicians are inherently skilled at like communication, problem solving, documentation, and analytical skills.

Have you worked with an implementation manager before in your current role? Maybe during an Epic or other EHR rollout? What did you appreciate about having this person around? Would you have changed anything?

Or maybe you have even served as the de facto implementation manager for something new in your place of practice? Is this type of work something that you could see yourself doing for others? Is the work that you did reflected on your resume? Something to think about as you consider roles in the tech industry.
